Well, once again, the past few weeks have slipped right by. I guess we must be keeping busy in Room 206...which we definitely are! Students continue to amaze me with their growth. I am trying to more purposefully discuss how the brain learns and the important skills they are practicing and learning that will help them develop into successful adults. I really do believe that if they understand a bit more about the process of learning their motivations towards learning may change.
As we roll into the end of November, report cards for term 1 will be made available. Report cards can be accessed via PowerSchool as of November 26th. If you need help or log-in information, please contact the school office. Here is a glance at the happenings and learning in our classroom: Literacy Reader's Workshop- we have shifted our focus to non-fiction reading strategies. So far we have discussed text features and "priming the pump" for reading non-fiction text. We will move into organizational structures and identifying main ideas and supporting facts in the coming weeks. Writer's Workshop- We have moved into our non-fiction/information text unit. Students have selected a topic of interest, developed tables of contents, researched to gather supporting information, and started drafting. We will work on strategies to elaborate in the coming weeks. Word Work- We have shifted to a center model to target word strategies. Mrs. Olsen has been working with students to fill in gaps in spelling and I have been supporting students with commonly misspelled words and soon, prefixes and suffixes. Numeracy Concepts: we have finished up with formal study of addition and subtraction strategies. We are moving into patterns and relations. Students have already looked at patterns in 100s charts and skip counting patterns. Problem Solving: Students will have various opportunities to build mathematical thinking through development and analysis of patterns in the coming weeks. We will also work on visualizing numbers. Basic facts: we will be moving into skip counting practice to prepare ourselves for multiplication facts. Social Studies We have moved onto our study of the regions of Canada. Students enjoyed touring Canada on Google Earth. We will look at features that make each region unique; specifically landforms, climate, resources and how they affect transportation, and quality of life in a region. Science We are just wrapping up our study of weather and climate. We will be moving into our study of electricity in the coming week. Have a wonderful week! Mrs. B |
