Well we have made it to the end of September and through our first month of school! CRAZY! The students in 4/5B continue to settle into the routines of our room and are definitely getting more comfortable with one another.
As we move into this week, a few reminders. 1. We return library books on Tuesdays. Please help your child remember to return their books. 2. We will honor Orange Shirt day on Wednesday, September 29th. 3. There is no school on Thursday, September 30th as we recognize Truth and Reconciliation Day. Here is a look at areas of learning this week: Literacy Reader's Workshop- we continue to review and learn reading strategies. We are using the novel Loser's Club to support us in this review. Students are really learning how to push their thinking and keep their minds turned on while reading. This week we will focus on summarizing. Writer's Workshop- we are nearing the end of our first writing unit. Students have been busy writing small moment stories (also known as personal narratives). They are mostly through drafting and will continue with revising and editing this week. Word Work- Students will work on new sorts this week. They also have time to practice writing their words and identifying them in reading to support understanding of words across literacy. Numeracy Number Concepts- This week we will wrap up our study of place value. Students are working on representing numbers in different ways. Problem Solving- students will have the opportunity to continue to investigate base 10 blocks and manipulating blocks to show numbers in different ways. Basic Facts- We are reviewing basic addition concepts through use of kakooma and games. Science We are into our first unit on Weather and Climate. Last week we investigated different fabrics and this week we will start to look more at temperature. Social Studies We are nearing the end of our map skills review. Students will soon be starting on a mapping project to show their understanding. I hope that you have the best week! Mrs. B Well we successfully navigated our first few weeks of school. Students are settling in and our classroom is definitely getting that community feel. I am excited to see what this year brings this amazing group.
A few things to remember for the week: 1. Meet the Teacher event is Tuesday from 6:00-7:00pm. I will be running 2 separate meetings; one at 6:00pm and one at 6:30pm to accomodate as many schedules as possible. Please refer to the letter sent home on Friday for instructions on how to access this event or visit the Meet the Teacher event page from the menu above. 2. The Terry Fox run will be occurring this coming Friday. Students are welcome to bring a toonie for Terry throughout the week in support of cancer research. And now, a quick look at our upcoming week: Literacy: Reader's Workshop- we are into our class novel, The Loser's Club by Andrew Clements. We are reviewing reading strategies as we read through this novel. This week we will review envisioning, predicting, and asking questions to keep our minds turned on while reading. Writer's Workshop- students have spent some time pushing themselves to recall events and experiences from their own lives to build ideas for our first writing unit; personal narratives. This week we will begin rehearsing our ideas and will hopefully get into drafting. Word Work- I have a few more initial assessments to complete before we move on to our first word units of study. I hope to start these on Wednesday. Numeracy: Concepts- we are reviewing place value. We will begin to look at value of numbers and comparing and ordering numbers this week. Problem Solving- we will explore open-ended tasks this week focused on use of base ten blocks and representing numbers concretely. Basic Facts- our current focus is basic addition and subtraction facts. We will continue to play games with a focus on these operations. Science: We are reviewing scientific skills and the scientific method this week. Students will learn how to make observations, draw labelled diagrams, compare and contrast, and record and represent data. When we are finished, we will move on to our first unit of study; Weather. Social Studies: We are currently reviewing map features. Students created compasses this past week and began to look at maps to determine relative location. We will continue to explore location and distance using scale this week. As always, please reach out if you have any questions or if you would like to know what is going on in our classroom. Have a great week! Mrs. B |
